GOLF COURSES IN CONCORD

Diablo Creek Golf Course

One of just two public golf courses in Concord, the Diablo Creek Golf Course is a pleasure to play for golfers of every skill level. The course is mostly flat, which is perfect for less experienced golfers.

Intermediate or advanced golfers won’t be bored, though. The course is dotted with water hazards, sand traps, and surrounded by trees, requiring strategic thinking and providing a good challenge even for experienced players.

Wide-open fairways allow golfers of all abilities to drive confidently, and easily accessible greens make approach shots less intimidating. However, some holes do offer more of a challenge than others.

There’s no specific signature hole on this course. However, golfers will find certain holes challenging and exciting. Hole 4 is a long par-3 with a constant crosswind that makes getting to the undulating green tricky.

Hole 11 features a narrow fairway flanked by trees that requires precision on the tee shot for a chance at par. The 17th hole is another par-3, but a three-tiered green could be the downfall of many golfers

Buchanan Fields Golf Course

Buchanan Fields Golf Course is a fun, links-style 9-hole course. It’s also one of the best courses for the price.

Golfers should make sure their long game is good, as there are more par 4s than 3s. It’s not the fanciest or challenging course you'll ever play, but it’s a fun time if you don’t have time for a full 18-hole round.

The fairways are well-groomed, and the greens are large but not as straightforward as they may seem. It’s an excellent course for new golfers to hone their skills and experienced golfers to play a lazy but fun round.

SURROUNDING AREAS

Boundary Oak Golf Course

Boundary Oak Golf Course in Walnut Creek was named the best golf course in Contra Costa County by Diablo Magazine in 2018 and 2019. It’s located in a beautiful setting, at the foot of Mount Diablo, providing both amazing views and excellent golf.

As it’s located on the slope of the mountain, golfers can expect a fair amount of slope in the course. This is especially important to keep in mind on approach shots, as you’ll want to stay below the hole to prevent losing shots.

The course favors intermediate to advanced golfers who play left to right. Golfers will find a variety of holes to be interesting and challenging. Hole number 2 is the first to offer some resistance, with the constant wind that you’ll need to fight against.

If you’ve got a strong drive, you can reach the green in 2 on the par-5 5th hole. Hole 11 can be considered the most difficult, with a dogleg right, a water hazard, and sloping, two-tiered green.

The course is also a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, which means that they take steps to preserve the natural environment and wildlife within their grounds.

Oakhurst Country Club

Oakhurst is a short drive from Concord in Clayton—slightly more than 10 minutes—but it's well worth packing your gear and taking the quick trip. However, it is a private club, so you’ll need to play with a member.

The links-style golf course is built perfectly into the foothills of Mount Diablo and offers exciting golf. To make every hole interesting, the course features elevation changes throughout, challenging greens that are well-shielded by hazards, and beautiful surroundings, with 360 acres of natural wetlands for you to admire while you play.

Unlike many others, this 7,205-yard, par-72 course offers 8 different sets of tees so that golfers of all abilities can have a fair chance of getting a good score.

The signature 18th hole is 435-yard par-4, and it’s considered one of the best finishing holes in the state. It requires two carries over a river gorge to get to the green.

Golfers should note that face masks are a requirement in all indoor areas of the club, regardless of vaccination status. Single-rider golf carts are also available for those who wish to socially distance themselves.

Round Hill Country Club

Just down the road from Concord, Round Hill Country Club in Alamo offers plenty of sporting opportunities. The 18-hole golf course not only offers excellent gameplay but also spectacular views.

The course is laid out in two distinct loops, which means you have a feeling of being all alone on the hole you’re playing.

Hole number 2 features a water hazard right behind the green, so accuracy is a must. Hole 3 has an enormous tree on the fairway in the line of play, which adds an element of challenge.

The par-3 7th hole is one of the most challenging holes, which has golfers playing over an intimidating dip. Your best option is to shoot to the left of the green with a 7-iron or 8-iron. Golfers will need to be strategic and stick to tight shots.

The course finishes off with a long par-5, leading to a sloped green with the clubhouse in the background. A narrow stream, sand traps, and closely-packed trees make the finisher a tough one for tired golfers, but don’t let your guard down.
