Port Chicago Weekend returns July 17 through 19 at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial. The annual gathering honors the Port Chicago Sailors and their role in both World War II and the civil rights movement through commemorations, film screenings, exhibits, and tours of the Red Oak Victory Ship. A related event at the Oakland Museum of California on July 11 kicks off the commemorative stretch. Registration details and schedules are available through the Port Chicago Alliance.
Thursday nights belong to Todos Santos Plaza. The Music and Market Series pairs the evening Farmers' Market with free live music from 6:30 to 8 pm, and this year's lineup is stacked:
The Todos Santos Plaza Farmers' Market runs Tuesdays year-round from 10 am to 2 pm, plus Thursday evenings from 4 to 8 pm through early fall. Local and regional vendors bring the produce, baked goods, and prepared food, and you bring the tote bag. Pair the Thursday market with the concert above and you've got a whole evening sorted.
Downtown Concord goes all in on July 4th with a full day of patriotic fun: a 5k and kids run to start the morning, a parade through downtown, a festival in between, and fireworks to close it out.
On Saturday, July 25, the Toyota Pavilion at Concord hosts Retro Junkie Summer Fest, an all-ages outdoor festival dedicated to the greatest hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The lineup features tribute acts including George Michael Reborn, Prince Again, You Should Be Dancing (a Bee Gees tribute), and The Knights of Queen, with music running from 2 to 8 pm and plenty of lawn space for dancing. Tickets start around $50, with reserved and premium seating available.
While you're at it, the Pavilion's July calendar also includes Jimmy Eat World on July 24 and Lil Wayne on July 31.
The waterpark formerly known as Waterworld has a new name, a new look, and more than 35 attractions, including the brand-new Splashwater Island, one of the area's largest wave pools, and Northern California's longest lazy river. When July temperatures climb, this is where Concord cools off. Prefer animals with your thrill rides? Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo is about 25 minutes away.
Not every swim day calls for a waterpark. Concord's public pools offer lap and recreational swim sessions all summer long, perfect for cooling down without committing to a full day of slides. Check the Concord Parks and Recreation website for current schedules and fees before you grab your towel.
Step back in time at the historic Galindo Home, where the Concord Historical Society has filled the rooms with a quilt display running through September. Tours are offered the first and third Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 pm (closed holiday weekends), and the Concord Museum has special attractions on view as well. It's a quieter pick for your July list, and a lovely one.
Local craft breweries and taprooms like Epidemic Ales and The Hop Grenade Taproom make the Beer Trail a worthy follow-up to the Taco Trail. A cold local pour on a hot July afternoon is a summer must.
Concord's parks are built for friendly competition. Find bocce courts at John F. Baldwin Park, Newhall Community Park, and Iron Horse Park, tennis at Willow Pass Community Park, Pine Hollow Courts, and Concord Community Park, sand volleyball at El Dorado Middle School Play Fields, a spray pad at Meadow-Homes-Spray-Park, and basketball at Rick Seers Neighborhood Park and John F. Baldwin Park. The City of Concord Parks and Recreation Department also runs tennis camps and classes all season long.
Make back-to-school season brighter for local children experiencing homelessness. The Back to School Backpack and Supply Drive is collecting new backpacks and school supplies through July 10, helping every child start the year feeling prepared and confident. It's a small gesture with a big impact, and one more reason to love this community.
However you like to spend a summer day, Concord has plenty to fill your July. Pick a few favorites from the list, round up your people, and make the most of the season. See you around town.
