The city of Concord holds remarkable—and often overlooked—connections to the bombing of Japan during World War II. Most, if not all, of the munitions ultimately dropped on Japanese cities were stored and handled at what is now the Concord Naval Weapons Station. The destructiveness of the bombs was felt locally in 1943, when the Port Chicago explosion shook Concord and surrounding communities with devastating force.
In the years before and after the war, Concord was also home to survivors of the bombings in Japan. Health permitting, one or more of these residents, some now‑centenarian, may be available to share their firsthand experiences, offering an extraordinary living link to this history.
