Part of what makes Concord such a desirable base for exploring wine country is its central proximity to all of Northern California’s famous wine regions, but some may not realize that it is also home to a bounty of wine tasting options right here in Contra Costa County. With more than 25 local wineries and tasting rooms within a short drive, it’s easy to make the most of your romantic getaway, girls weekend, mountain adventure or family trip.
The Shadowbrook Winery in Walnut Creek has a new state-of-the-art tasting room that is the perfect place to sample wines from its collection, which have won more than 60 medals in competition. Also in Walnut Creek, Grayson Cellars is known for its small lots of handcrafted wines.
In Martinez, California, just northwest of Concord, the Viano Vineyards has been making wine for nearly 100 years, with the 4th and 5th generation of the Viano family now running the operation. Some of the original vines remain on the property, which has been expanded using the most natural processes possible. Les Lunes Wine in Orinda, southwest of Concord, is another smaller vineyard making incredible creations by cultivating its grapes through natural methods. The Contra Costa Winegrowers Association can help you find even more options in this up-and-coming wine region of the state.
Searching for a Sauvignon Blanc that's as delicious as it is sustainable? Hannah Nicole Vineyards in Brentwood has 54 acres of vines farmed sustainably with a strong emphasis on minimal impact and Biodiversity. The vineyard is planted with all red Bordeaux varietals, Grenache and Mourvedre for some Rhone Spirit and some new world Petite Sirah. White varietals on property are our renown Sauvignon Blanc along with Viognier. Their philosophy is that quality wine starts with quality fruit and a healthy vineyard, and the winemaking aims at preserving that quality throughout the process to produce wines that are genuine and interesting for both connoisseurs and novices.
A newer winery, Petersen Vineyards was established in 2012, and with the desire to learn the trade from top to bottom, they started to grow and manage their own grape vines. With the first harvest in just 2013, by the following year in 2014 they crafted our now famous Diablo Sunset. Petersen grow grapes are carefully selected to fit with the climate and soil. Aromas, boldness and mouth feel, spices and tannins are all attributes we sort to control through careful grape management and selection.
