Irish Canyon Audubon Hike - Mt. Diablo
Walnut Creek, CA 94598
to 12:00 PM
Join Save Mount Diablo for a guided tour in partnership with Mount Diablo Audubon Society of the spectacular 320-acre Irish Canyon property with local bird experts and hike leaders, Maren Smith, Jerry Britten, and Joan Duffield. The property is marked by three spring-fed branches of Irish Creek; blue oak woodland covers northeast-facing slopes, and valley oak savannah and grassland climb toward Kreiger Peak. Steep slopes are sculpted by landslide slumps. The property supports more than 400 species of plants and animals, provides world-class views very few living people have seen, and has a rich history including two homestead sites. The hike is roughly five miles round trip with 900 feet of elevation gain/loss. No dogs are allowed. Be sure to dress in layers and wear sturdy boots or shoes; bring binoculars, if you own them, plenty of water, sunscreen, and a snack. Heavy rain cancels.
