Travelers and locals alike can choose from an assortment of options that are perfect for grabbing a bite and a beverage before an adventure or sitting down for a complete dining experience. Every now and then a diamond is found in the rough. Chopan Kabob is nestled unassumingly on Monument Boulevard amid tire and auto repair shops, but don’t let that dissuade you. Inside, you will find a small but cozy space adorned with murals and an attentive staff that serves up authentic Afghan cuisine.
Chopan offers Halal meats and juicy kabobs of lamb, beef and chicken. On the table, you will find an assortment of condiments to pair with your meals. Spicy red and mild green chutney, dried pomegranate powder and cayenne sit in bottles and jars.
A basket of flatbread baked in a stone oven and drizzled with sauce will fill up your stomach as you’re waiting for your order. In addition to kabobs, Chopan serves up wraps with succulent tender meat — fragrant with spices and wrapped in tandoori flatbread — as well as appetizers and house specials.
Big Breakfasts, Hearty Lunches and Fine Dinners
Buttercup Grill and Bar is a long-established, family-run restaurant where guests can be assured of a delicious meal at any time of the day. David and Debbie Shahvar opened the first of their five premises in Walnut Creek in 1988, and today continue to serve great food in a family-friendly setting.
The breakfast menu alone should delight diners young and old, and the choices range from pancakes and waffles to buttermilk biscuits, omelets, or to classic bacon and eggs. After this, guests are likely to be keen to come back and try out lunch, dinner and desserts, where the menus are all equally tempting.
A Bistro of Flavor
Bistro Restaurant & Lounge, located inside the Clarion Hotel Concord, is highlighting the best of local ingredients. Taking full advantage of its prime location in the East Bay Area, next to fresh seafood straight from the coast and just-picked crisp fruits and vegetables from local orchards and farms, Executive Chef Chris Cook finds joy in creating bright, flavor-infused dishes made from all locally grown products. The restaurant draws from the year-round growing season to create rich dishes full of California flavor.
Go-To Destination for Subs and Sandwiches
Sometimes, when lunchtime approaches, or when hunger bites later in the day, all that is needed is somewhere familiar and reliable to grab a sandwich. Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop has franchises at various locations across the country, and their famous sandwiches can be relied upon for a tasty meal.
There is something on the menu to suit most tastes, but turkey sandwiches are the house specialty. Capriotti’s also makes many other delicious sandwiches, and diners can order kids’ meals and salads, along with vegetarian options that are inspired by the turkey sandwiches.
Embrace the Flame
If you’re in the mood for some grilled meat in Concord, steer your way over to Charbird. As its straight-to-the-point name suggests, this place specializes in charbroiled chicken — whether you want it in wing, burrito or sandwich form. Besides flame-licked fowl, you’ve got beef, pork and other meats to choose from, plus salads, fries, rice and other sides.
Charbird is a fast-food kind of joint with mighty generous servings. That makes it the perfect destination for anyone with a raging appetite.
Sharing the deliciousness (what we call ice cream sandwiches) with local communities was our goal when we opened our first CREAM store. We wanted families who did not have the time or could not afford to make these at home to be able to enjoy an ice cream sandwich. We loved them so much, and we knew others would too. Who doesn’t love mom’s fresh baked cookies paired with thick and creamy ice cream?
In 2010, Jimmy and Gus Shamieh led the Shamieh family in opening the first location in Berkeley, California. Working the store from open to close, the Shamieh family started serving happiness one ice cream sandwich at a time.
We started with cookie ice cream sandwiches, but we soon ventured into other vehicles of happiness. This led us to develop ice cream sandwiches using brownies, do’sants, and fresh off the griddle waffles. Happiness is now served whichever way you like.
Dig the Grub
General Manager Digger Dave got his name from once working as a grave digger, but the atmosphere in Digger’s Diner is far from dead. This award-winning diner is famous for its burgers (with creative names like The Coffin, The Stubb and The Crypt on the menu, how could you go wrong?) Pair one of those bad boys with garlic or cheese fries and one of Digger’s delicious milkshakes — also a local fave. And if you’re in search of breakfast, you’ve met your match. Fans of spicy foods should opt for the Inferno Omelet, which is sure to fire you up first thing in the morning. If you’re visiting on the weekend, be sure to get to Digger’s early so you don’t have to wait in line.
Better Than Phair Fare
From beers to burgers, the fine folks at E. J. Phair Alehouse have all of your noshing needs covered. Whether you’re looking for some delicious grub (with some equally tasty beer) or just a great spot to kick back with a cold one, E. J. Phair should be on your to-do list.
Start things off with an order of garlic fries, and see where things go from there. Just expect to be rather spoiled for choice; their menu has everything from pizza and pasta to burgers, and you can bet that there’s a great beer to pair with whatever you order.
Rustic, Casual and Friendly
If you’re looking for gourmet burgers paired with craft beer or craft cocktails, you’ll strike gold at Eureka! Eureka’s inventive burgers (try the Bone Marrow or Fresno Fig!) and delicious creations (you’ll love the Fried Chicken Sliders and Corn Dogs made with polish sausage) make it the perfect spot for watching the big game or unwinding to some local live music. Weekend visitors must sample the brunch menu, offering everything from chilaquiles to avocado toast to fried chicken, along with more traditional items like breakfast burritos and a classic breakfast plate with eggs, potatoes and bacon or ham.

A Howling Good Time
Warm and comfortable is what Chris Simms, CEO of Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar, wanted to impart to his patrons. Like the dog days of summer, dining at Lazy Dog is like a pooch lying in the sun: warm, happy and content.
The cuisine here is modern American and offers a wide selection of favorites like pizza, pasta, burgers and fries. With gluten-free and kids’ menus and plenty of selections for vegetarians, Lazy Dog is great for any type of diner. Even your pet Fido is welcome to come along and enjoy a spot on the dog-friendly patio. You Picked a Fine Time to Feed Me, Lucille
Lucille Buchanan grew up eating good barbecue in her grandma’s lunch shack outside of Greenville. Summers and weekends working for her grandmother taught Lucille how to wow customers with the best barbecue in the land.
After swearing to her granny she’d never share her secrets, Lucille learned the ingredients to the special spice rubs, wet mops and sauces her grandmother used. Besides amazing BBQ selections, Lucille offers stomach-fillers like mac and cheese (a customer favorite), french fries and warm buttermilk biscuits — Lucille’s own addition to the menu.
The peach cobbler sets the down-home, American feel and the relaxed atmosphere and TVs playing sports around makes Lucille’s a great place to go on weekends to relax, drink a large mason jar of lemonade or a glass of beer and enjoy BBQ that slides right off the bone.

Hot Spot for Enjoying Hot Pot
What’s hot pot? Think Asian fondue. For the unfamiliar, hot pot (also known as steamboat) is an East Asian stew where guests order their choice of meats, seafood and vegetables and then cook them in a pot of boiling broth in the center of their table. It’s a fun, unique way for friends or families to spend time together while enjoying delicious food.
After working for several years in the restaurant industry, owner Samson Cheung decided to open Steamboat in his hometown of Concord. Beginning in his days working as a waiter, Cheung loved creating an environment where his customers could enjoy a celebratory night full of memories while enjoying a delicious meal. With food as a central theme in how we celebrate big and small occasions, Cheung had a desire to create an inviting, casual environment and knew hot pot was the perfect food to bring people together.
Steamboat offers guests a variety of options and caters to their various taste and food preferences. Looking for a vegetarian broth? No problem! Like your food extra spicy? They will gladly accommodate. And what memorable dining experience is complete without a delicious dessert? Steamboat proudly serves Brick macaron ice cream sandwiches. Between their vibrant colors and rich, creamy finish, guests won’t be able to resist this sweet summation to their meal.

Good Food, Good Value
Serving a range of dishes in the Indo-Pakistani tradition, you can (as the name says) get everything from naan to curry dishes. Everything is made to order, so you won’t have that overheated buffet experience. Best of all, you can choose whether to eat in the restaurant, order takeout or even have your meal delivered.
In addition to the biryani (fried rice), curries (lamb, chicken, seafood and vegetable) and tandoori dishes on the menu, they have daily specials. Gluten-free and vegan dishes are also available.
Italian with a Moroccan Kick
If you consider yourself to have a sophisticated palate or even if you’re just a lover of Italian cuisine, Fiore Restaurant serves up Italian with French and Mediterranean touches in a warm, inviting atmosphere. Dine in the red room in the back for a little romance as Chef Habib El Jacifi creates new dishes with a mixed flair.
Having grown up in Morocco, Chef Jafici encountered many different types of cuisine and uses these influences to create dishes like lamb shank braised with a demi-glace and gorgonzola sauce or Salmon Liveronese — pan-seared salmon with capers, olives and basil in a tomato-lobster sauce.
Fiore’s serene, upscale atmosphere is an oasis tucked away from the hustle and bustle. It’s a great place for a date night or birthday celebration or simply a night out for fine dining. The restaurant caters to food sensitivities and offers gluten-free pasta.
A Small Piece of Italy
Owner and chef Abdel Redouane has years of experience cooking in Italy and France. Upon arriving in the U.S., he honed his skills in San Francisco’s famous downtown restaurants, bringing his education and expertise to American palates. When Redouane recognized the need for a true Italian restaurant in Concord, Luna Ristorante was born.
Redouane only selects and prepares dishes that he truly believes in; so guests can be assured any choice is the right one — from seafood and veal to always fresh-made pasta. (Pro tip: The nightly specials are worth exploring, as well.) Looking for a traditional Italian dish that is not on the menu? With his diverse culinary background and service-centric attitude, Redouane welcomes custom orders. No matter your choice, Luna Ristorante also has a great selection of wines to pair with any meal.
With an inviting and comfortable atmosphere, guests feel right at home — which is exactly how Redouane intends it to be. Luna Ristorante offers guests the chance to feel and eat like you’re in Italy without having to leave the country. Cin cin!
Watch the Chefs in Action
If you’ve never been to Benihana, you have to try it; if you know about them already, the Concord restaurant is one of the larger, well-run full-service locations you could ever want. The heart of the Benihana experience is their teppanyaki cooking style: The group (because it’s best experienced as a larger party) sits on tall chairs around three sides of a big table, the center of which is a steel cooking surface. The chef prepares beef, chicken, shrimp — whatever the order — with a flourish of knives, spatulas and props while he keeps up a patter of jokes, puns and comments. Tremendous fun!
Diners also have the option of enjoying the sushi bar. Express lunches (for quick weekday meals), to-go orders and Kabuki Kids birthday meals for children 12 and younger are also available.
Rolling in Happy Japanese
If sushi makes you happy, the Japanese-fusion restaurant Happy Roll will fill your plate with creative sushi and sashimi selections. The exterior of the restaurant is plain but the inside is trendy, sultry and hip.
For sushi connoisseurs with a sense of adventure, Happy Roll offers unique rolls like the Heart Attack (spicy tuna tempura with jalapeno and spicy house sauce) or the Concord Fire Roll (a delicious combination of spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and spices).
Along with a great selection of sushi, Happy Roll offers tempura and bento boxes with Japanese specialties like chicken teriyaki and spicy pork. It can get crowded on the weekends so plan ahead.
American Food, Gangnam Style
Gangnam is a neighborhood in the city of Seoul where people often go to party. At Gangnam Café, the party is on your plate. The café is unassuming but relaxed and serves American-style breakfast and lunch.
Gangnam is a regular stop for the locals and the walls are adorned with pictures of the food they serve along with the specials of the day. It’s sure to get your stomach rumbling. The menu is filled with flavorful Korean dishes like galbi (marinated beef) and bibimbap (a mixed rice dish).
Standard American café/diner type fare is also served with breakfast faves such as omelets and eggs benedict and lunch items like burgers, grilled cheese and melts. If you have room, the fried bananas make a sweet ending to a filling meal.
Home Cooking, Korean Style
Whether you’re in search of lunch or dinner, Korea House will provide you with enough choices to fill your Korean-food craving. The casual setting is clean and inviting and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The appetizer selection is tempting: fried dumplings, rice cakes in hot sauce and an impressive variety of pancakes (like oyster pancakes!) make a meal in themselves. Otherwise, you can enjoy Korean barbecue, hot pot, stew, soups or bibimbap (the chap chae with Korean glass noodles is a classic!). The banchan side dishes are refillable, too. Great food at very reasonable prices.
Modern Mexican Style
Canasta Kitchen uses a secret ingredient when they make their delicious Mexican cuisine, the same ingredient used in the cooking of many mothers and grandmas love, or the Spanish translation “amor.” After the Canasta Kitchen’s food truck’s tremendous popularity, owners Ivan Tellez and Carlos Rivas decided to open a restaurant.
The minimalist decor in the cafe is modern and comfortable. There is also a small outdoor seating area. The owners are often present in the restaurant, willing to greet each customer with a friendly smile.
The breakfast menu features a range of Mexican-influenced dishes, including huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos, eggs, and omelets. The lunch and dinner menus are also packed with plenty of delicious options, including quesadillas, tacos, empanadas, and flautas. The cafe also serves beer, wine, mimosas, and sangria.
